Sound Dampening - Sound Control
Sound Dampening or Sound Control is the least expensive but most effective use of your auto or truck upgrade budget. Just a small amount of sound dampening material can have a profound effect on noise reduction. In a typical application, applying sound dampening material to the doors of your vehicle can reduce road noise up to 6 dB! This is a huge reduction in noise in the auto environment. Complete coverage for an average vehicle can reduce road noise as much as 18 dB!
You can apply sound dampening material in patches (25-50% area coverage) to keep a specific panel from resonating, or you can apply it over an entire area (such as the floor, doors, or trunk) to create a sound barrier and thermal insulator.
The leader and most popular name in sound dampening and sound control is Dynamat. Dynamat offers a full variety of products in a huge range of size and thickness to fill every need. In recent years we have been won over by the Cascade sound damping line. The major improvement we found over the dynamat product is the new Cascade product is vinyl based instead of the traditional asphalt based dynamat sound damping products. This newer product line is more flexible and more easily installed by anyone.
Installing any brand sound dampening material requires only a few basic tools: Razor knife or scissors, roller tool, rags, and a solvent-based cleaner (rubbing alcohol also works). Don't forget basic hand tools for the disassembly and reassembly of your vehicle. Sound Control or Sound Dampening is probably one of the most neglected areas of auto or truck upgrades.
To get the very best results possible from your new expensive speakers or components, don't forget sound dampening. Both Dynamat and Cascade Sound Dampening products come in ready-to-install speaker kits, door kits and trunk kits.
